A Felony Attorney in San Antonio, Texas Provides Defense for Kidnapping, Arson and Assault

Seek the guidance of a trusted felonies attorney

Through my firm, Kevin L. Collins, P.C., I have more than 27 years of federal trial experience and understand how to approach a wide variety of felony case types. I aggressively advocate for you in and out of the courtroom to ensure you get the best possible chance of securing a positive result. As a sole practitioner, you can always be sure that you have access to me whenever you have questions or concerns about your case.

The different types of felony crimes

Felonies are major crimes that carry much heavier punishments than misdemeanors, such as prison time, probation, large fines and more. According to The Sentencing Project, felonies disenfranchise more than 5.8 million people in the U.S. each year, preventing them from voting and taking part in other civil activities.

Though I have significant legal defense experience, I have focused on three specific types of cases. They are:

  • Kidnapping: Kidnapping occurs when a person unlawfully captures another person without consent. There is usually some sort of nefarious purpose behind the abduction, such as a ransom or reward. Whatever the reason for the crime, it is a serious federal offense. A criminal lawyer handling a kidnapping case must have a thorough understanding of kidnapping laws, such as the Lindbergh Act and other statutes, and I do.
  • Arson: Arson is the purposeful and malicious burning of a property, commonly a dwelling or public building. Many arson cases involve insurance fraud, such as burning an insured dwelling to unlawfully collect payment for the loss. There are various degrees of arson, and the classification of an arson crime depends on a variety of factors including the type of building burnt, number of inhabitants or users, time of day at which the burning occurred and more.
  • Assault: Assault can be classified as either a misdemeanor or a felony. The type of assault most commonly classified as a felony is aggravated assault, in which the alleged perpetrator has an intent beyond frightening a victim. Most aggravated assaults involve the use of a deadly weapon, as opposed to simply pointing a gun at someone to intimidate them. Rape is another type of aggravated assault.
